Zahra was pleased to host a Durham Social Connections event with Male Belly dancing! Zahra and the guys spend one hour learning and practising a dance and then perfecting it. The ladies paid $10 to watch the guys perform. The DSC Burlesque class of Zahra's as performed. In the end, $400 was raised for the Humane Society of Durham Region. Way to go guys! Zahra's School specializes in everything belly dance, including belly dance classes, costumes, jewelry and music.
Belly dance is a form of performing art, with its graceful hip movements, rolls, and leg movements. The dance allows us to utilize muscle groups in the stomach, pelvis, arms, neck and spine and also allows us to work with the body instead of against it. Unlike different dance forms, belly dancing allows women to embrace movements that come naturally to the female form. There is a wealth of health benefits to those who practice this form of dance, such as:
♦ Improved Muscle & Posture – the repetitive movement of hip movements, figure eights and shimmies helps increase the flow of fluid into the joints. With strengthened stomach muscles improved posture can prevent back pain.
♦ Defines Arms, Shoulders and the Core – constant arm lifts allow toning of the muscles in the arms and shoulders. Movements allow you to strengthen your core. You will notice that these areas will be more defined as you continue the dance classes.
♦ It can prevent osteoporosis and strengthens bones.
♦ Can lead to weight loss, and adds a great benefit to people with diabeties.
♦ Most importantly, it helps improve self-image and increase confidence.
